ACBL Teaching Materials and Free Teacher Manuals

Overview of ACBL's curriculum materials and the free downloadable teacher manuals available to bridge instructors.

ACBL offers curriculum resources to help teachers structure their classes, from complete beginners through advancing players. These include the Intro to Bridge Series and the ACBL Bridge Series, available through the ACBL Resource Center.

A large library of teacher manuals is available free to download. Each manual is broken into an introduction and numbered lessons:

  • Bidding in the 21st Century — nine lessons from Getting Started through the Stayman Convention. Introduction (PDF)
  • Play of the Hand in the 21st Century — nine lessons covering making a plan, the finesse, entries, trump management, and more. Contents (PDF)
  • Defense in the 21st Century — nine lessons on opening leads, third- and second-hand play, signals, and negative doubles. Introduction (PDF)
  • Commonly Used Conventions — eight lessons including Stayman, Jacoby Transfers, weak two-bids, and the strong 2♣. Introduction (PDF)
  • More Commonly Used Conventions — eight lessons including negative and other doubles, overcalls, Blackwood and Gerber, and two-over-one. Introduction (PDF)

Additional standalone teacher manuals include the Modern NoTrump Bidding Teacher Manual (PDF), Major Suit Raises I (PDF), and Major Suit Raises II (PDF), plus the Play Course for the Advancing Student I (PDF).
